UTP: How did you meet Joy Marie Conway?
Jade: I MET, MMMNNN HOW'D I MEET HER? I MET HER THROUGH MY FRIEND, THEY WERE ROOMMATES. OOHH NO! I MET HER AT A POTLUCK IN BROOKLYN. WE ALL WATCHED 'PARIS IS BURNING' AND OF COURSE VOGUING WAS INVOLVED. JOY WON.
UTP: What made you (Cereus Arts) want to present this in DC?
Jade: WHEN I SAW FAT FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SPRING, SOMETHING IN ME CHANGED. IT WAS PRESENTED WITH TWO OTHER ONE WOMAN SHOWS BUT JOY SHUT IT DOWN. IT'S LIKE, THOUGH WE'RE VERY DIFFERENT IN SIZE, WE SHARED THE SAME STORY. IT WAS FUNNY, IT WAS TOUCHING AND IT WAS TRUE.
UTP: Is this the first play Cereus Arts has presented?
Jade: THIS IS OUR FIRST THEATER PRODUCTION. CEREUS ARTS HAS ORGANIZED TOURS. WE'VE DONE A LOT OF WORK IN PRESENTING POETRY. SO THIS IS A BIG STEP. VERY GRATEFUL TO J. SCALES FOR HER SUPPORT IN MAKING THIS HAPPEN AND REALLY, THE STAGE JUST COMMANDS A WHOLE DIFFERENT ATTITUDE FROM THE AUDIENCE. IT FORCES US TO SHOW UP IN A DIFFERENT WAY. TAKE IN ALL THE WORDS AND IMAGES AND SOUNDS.
Why should people come see this play?
Jade: PEOPLE SHOULD COME SEE THIS PLAY BECAUSE THEY ARE THIS PLAY. I MEAN, NAME A WOMAN, SHOOT NAME A MAN WHO HASN'T THOUGHT ABOUT THEIR WEIGHT. HASN'T WENT ON A DIET. AS A CULTURE WE'RE CONSUMED WITH FOODS. THIS PLAY LOOKS AT THOSE FOODS, QUESTIONS WHAT IT MEANS TO OUR FAMILIES. HOW WE EAT DINNER TOGETHER. NOT ONLY THAT, WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU CAN'T EAT WITH YOUR FAMILY FOR GENERATIONS TO COME, BECAUSE OF POOR CHOICES.
What is the purpose of Cereus Arts?
Jade: CEREUS ARTS' PURPOSE IS TO SERVE
CEREUS ARTS is an arts initiative that promotes the visibility of queer women of color through media, literature and community.
